Hummels said goodbye: I came here at the age of 19 to grow up with Dortmund, which is the best thing
The warm-up match of Dortmund's 1-2 loss to Juventus last night was also Hummels' retirement farewell match. Hummels spoke on the court after the game.
Hummels told Dortmund's home fans: "I came here 17 years ago, when I was only 19 years old and was still a young man. I grew up with you, and I can't imagine anything better than growing up in this club and this city."
Then Hummels said to the Dortmund players: "I hope some of you will feel the same way I am now in a few years. This is the best thing that can happen to me." Then the Dortmund fans stood up and applauded and cheered.
Hummels played for Dortmund twice from January 2008 to June 2016, and from July 2019 to June 2024. He played 508 times, scoring 38 goals and assisting 23 times. He is the second most player in Dortmund club history, second only to Zorke (572 games). Hummels won two Bundesliga titles, two German Cup titles, and two Champions League finals with the team. Dortmund's home stands also featured a portrait of Hummels, who will stay on the court forever like other Dortmund legends.
