World Sports: 82% of Polish fans choose Lewandowski as the captain, and 18% choose Zelinsky
According to a poll, 82% of Polish fans support re-granting the national captain's armband to the Barcelona striker, while only 18% believe midfielder Zelinsky is more suitable for this role.
Lewandowski has 158 national team appearances and has scored 85 goals for the national team. Earlier, he was stripped of his captainship after a match against Moldova and Finland last May due to a disagreement with former head coach Mihal Proberz. Lewandowski thought he needed a break and did not participate in those two games. The disagreement eventually led to Probelz's departure, and former Spanish Osasuna forward Jan Urban took over as head coach of the Polish national team. Although Lewandowski is about to turn 37, he scored 42 goals for Barcelona last season and performed very well.
Urban said: "I spoke to Lewandowski on the phone and asked if he would like to return to the national team. He said he would, so we took an important step. If our best player, our star player, is no longer playing for the national team, it would be a big problem."
At present, Lewandowski has participated in the team training almost throughout the entire time and is likely to be selected for the roster against Levante. Regarding the question of the captain's candidate, Urban said: "I not only want to talk to Lewandowski, but also want to hear the opinions of other relevant players, including Zelinsky and others. Although the decision is up to me, I want to understand what the players think."
